Master Plan for Wapato
Bear in mind that at the time this plan was implemented, the thought was that one or two water fountains could be placed in the lake to alleviate the pollution problem. Since the consultant was hired, it has been found that water fountains or bubblers can only help once other measures are taken.

J C Pennies Major remodeling:
According to a Tacoma News Tribune clipping from Oct. 10, 1985,
a "major renovation and expansion of the J.C. Penney Tacoma Mall store
will begin after the Christmas rush" - so according to the article, the
renovation took place in early 1986. Apparently the project was
planned to start the summer of 1985, but was delayed to happen after
the Christmas rush. The renovation included refurbishing both floors,
and the addition of a third floor.
Hope this helps!

Calculations for the amount of waste in Wapato from the Tacoma Mall
These are the three web sites used to calculate the figures for the impact of the human waste from the Tacoma Mall on Wapato Retention Pond.
The figures used for these calculations were taken from NASA for human waste per day with a regulated diet.
Not the kind of diet most Americans eat. There are other web sites that give a figure of seven pounds per person of waste per day, so the figures used in my calculations are probably lower than average.
365 days a year
260 work days per year in a 365 day year. 52 X 5 = 260
250 days after taking off two weeks for vacation. 260- 10 = 250
J C Pennies has approximately 250 employees (Tacoma Public Library—October 2007)
Let us just assume one shift although we all know they are open longer than one shift.
Not everyone has a bowel movement every day or not at work every day—the site above gives a figure of 30% that do not have a bowl movement every day period. So just to make things fair we will use only 125 of these workers per day.
NASA’s recommendation for waste design.
See sight above.
“We suggest design for a crew of 8 to be 34.5 liters per day (4315 ml/person/day) for urine and stool water and a little more than 1.25 kg per day (154 g/person/day) of human waste solids and sanitary supplies.”
Human waste solids and sanitary supplies
454/154 = 2.95 lbs per person per day.
2.95 lbs per day times 250 days = 737.50 lbs of waste per person per yea
737.50 times 125 people = 92,187.5 lbs per 125 people per year
92187.5 lbs per 125 people times nine years = 829,688 pounds
829,688 / 2000 = 414.8 tons of human waste solids and sanitary supplies dumped into the Wapato Retention Pond since 1998.
Stool water and urine.
1 fluid ounce = 29.57ml
1 gallon = 128 ounces
1 gallon = 3785.6 ml
4315/29.57 = 146 ounces per day for urine and stool water.
4315ml / 3785.6ml = 1.14 gallons per person per day
1.14 gallons per day per person X 250 days = 285 gallons of urine and stool water per person per year
285 gallons per person per year x 125 people = 35625 gallons per year per 125 people
35625 x 9 years = 320,625 gallons of urine and stool water dumped into the Wapato Retention Pond since 1998
